Just this evening to kill time I was jus scrollin thru some channels on the idiot box..n I come across dis ad which shows...A man being able to impress a panel of Male Interviewers and grabs a job jus coz he uses a MEN FAIRNESS CREAM..?? Coz using that cream makes him look presentable, confident and witty!!! Also, followin dis ad immediately was a competitor fairness cream AD....where I see Shahid Kapoor addressin young guys why they shud be using the cream that he uses too!!!!!!! Damn even the rough and tough sports personalities are endorsing such beauty products!!! Geeeezzzzz pls gimme a break!!
It's real funny that so much is being done to woo the urban male. Well, NO, not just with cars, bikes, gizmos, handphones, notebooks, Gaming softwares.....bla bla bla..!! These macho playthings are a given, and have been temptations thrown their way for decades now. Not that these are still implicable only for men...yeah we women too are now way too ahead n njoyin all these exclusive privileges meant for men earlier days! Dats now a different story..would definitely post my views on this sometime soon.
But now here I am talking of the "MEN MAKE BEAUTIFUL" products that seems to be now so common for beauty industry players across segments. Suddenly there is a plethora of indulgence for THE MAN. From fragrances made especially keeping his persona in mind, to a hair gel and to now even a SKIN WHITENING CREAM. The result of the years of research that tell us how different a man's skin is from ours and, thus, requires a whole range of products all his alone!!
Boy O Boy....have men come a long way...I remember my decently handsome looking dad. He wasn't rugged, he was gentle yet stern, loved smart clothes and took pride in his collection of impeccable shirts [ofcourse which mum bought for him ;)] Infact guessing he must have been a metrosexual then, but, ofcourse neither he nor anyone of us had the term METROSEXUAL then! Thx to Mark Simpson for gettin the urban world use dis term ;)..well..Dad had one habit which made me secretly giggle and question myself while I was a kiddo..every morning after his shave, he would wash his face and then dab few drops of the OLD SPICE cologne on his chubby cheeks...yeah those days this was d only brand and cosmetic for men apart from some perfumes ;) I wondered why dad had to even use dat...was it coz it made his cheeks feel cooler after d strong strokes of razor...or was it coz he smelt good after it (not dat he dint spray his awesome fragrances on himself) or rather it gave a shiny effect to his charming face?? Well, these were Qs while I was a tiny stupid girlie. Know I really knw d purpose! Newayz..I wonder what he would have made of way too many brands and varieties of offerings available now :)
Hmmmm...so 'Men are worth it too’ – perhaps it was this condescending tagline of the cosmetics brand that was the tipping point. Or perhaps it was the self sneering collective burden of accommodating the sissiness of pink, and the cultivated façade of ‘extra sensitivity’ that finally embarrassed the metrosexual man. The remnants of masochistic, male dominating behavior that seemed all but lost have made their resounding comeback – bigger, better and decidedly smarter. Damn few years back...I was surprised when The Maruti Suzuki SX4, a new mid-size sedan announced its introduction, and position, with the line ‘Men are back’ ...lol....had they disappeared??? ;) Also..another ad from Fastrack eye wear launched a new range of eye gear called the Biker’s collection which featured very traditional macho male styles and was summed up by the tagline ‘Bikers don’t cry’.. OMG..plzzzzzzz these days gals too r bikers dude!! N gals do cry :)
Guess times are changing..and I am thankful that it is! One common observation I have heard from some International speakers (flying across d seas to India) who used to speak at the conferences me n my professional folks organised..over a mug of beer at downtimes..is that Indian women are graceful and beautiful, but the men leave much to be desired. There is a certain take it or leave it attitude in them towards their dressing, looks or rather even their body shapes! But with a lil help from us and with all the fashion and cosmetic houses falling on men...my Question here comes...What bet that in the present or generations to come, the men will finally be worthy of their women?? ;)
